Story #24: The “We Sing, We Dance” Kind of Moment

Have you ever experienced a moment like the one I had yesterday? Somewhere, somehow, you hear a song you haven’t heard in many, many years. It stirs something deep within you, evoking memories of a feeling, a moment, or a circumstance long past. It can make you smile, excite you, bring on a wave of melancholy, or even compel you to dance, all depending on the moment in time you associate with that song.

Last night, I had one of those déjà vu moments. It was a fleeting experience, but it struck me with such intensity that I felt compelled to capture it, to become more aware of it, rather than let it slip by unnoticed. I believe we all have these moments—those sudden, vivid memories triggered by a song, a scent, or a place. Too often, I’ve let them pass unappreciated, overshadowed by the busyness of life. Now, I’m making a conscious effort to live more mindfully, to cherish these small, yet significant memories despite the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

This moment of reflection reminds me of another song, one by Jason Mraz. That song brings up a memory of a solo road trip I once took along the East side of Maui, driving the winding Hana Highway. The album “We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things” was my soundtrack, filling the car with its melodies as I navigated the lush, scenic route. It was an amazing experience—one of those rare times when you feel perfectly in sync with the world around you.

These moments, these “We Sing, We Dance” kinds of moments, are like little treasures. They remind us of who we were and how far we’ve come. They bring a sense of joy, nostalgia, and sometimes a bittersweet longing for times gone by. But more than anything, they remind us to be present, to appreciate the here and now, and to embrace the memories that make us who we are. So, the next time you hear an old favorite song, take a moment to listen, to remember, and to dance—literally or figuratively. Because these moments, these memories, are what make life truly beautiful.
